President-Elect Obama. What does this mean for America?

Well, it happened. Barack Obama has been elected the 44th President of the United States. The "Hope" and "Change" message clearly resonated. I'm feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness. For those who voted for him, what are your biggest expectations? For those who didn't, what are your main concerns looking ahead to 2009?

My expectation is a complete shift in America's image abroad. After the last eight years, we need to rebuild relationships. His speech in Berlin showed the world is listening. I also hope he moves quickly on healthcare - the system is broken.

My concern is the economy. He's inheriting a financial crisis. The "change" he promised requires money we might not have. All these ambitious plans could crash into the reality of the recession. Promises are easier than governing.

Regardless of politics, this is a monumental historical moment. A Black man elected to the highest office, something many thought they'd never see. That in itself is a powerful form of change for the country's psyche.

I'm worried about a liberal super-majority if the Democrats control Congress. Unchecked power is rarely a good thing, no matter which party has it. There needs to be strong, principled opposition.

His first big test will be the auto industry. GM and Chrysler are on the brink. Does he bail them out? Let them fail? That decision will set the tone for his entire economic policy. It's going to be a brutal first year.
