Remember the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony? Unreal.
Months later, and I still get chills thinking about the opening ceremony in Beijing. The 2,008 drummers, the giant scroll, the footprints in the sky... it was the most spectacular thing I've ever seen on TV. Was it worth the reported $100 million+? Did it set a bar that future host cities can't possibly reach?

It was a statement. China telling the world, "We have arrived, and we can do things on a scale you can't imagine." It was awe-inspiring, but also a bit intimidating. The sheer control and precision were mind-boggling.
As a spectacle, 10/10. As a representation of the human spirit? A bit cold. It felt more like a perfectly engineered machine than a celebration. Give me the messy joy of Sydney or Atlanta any day. This felt like it was for the Politburo, not the people.
The technology was the star. The LED scroll, the coordinated lighting on the performers... it was a glimpse of the future of large-scale events. London 2012 has a huge act to follow, but they'll probably go for a different, more cultural vibe.
Worth every penny for China's soft power. The world watched in awe. You can't buy that kind of PR. For the next generation, "Beijing 2008" will be synonymous with peak Olympic grandeur. It redefined what an opening ceremony could be.
My favorite part was the section on movable type printing. Turning ancient invention into a breathtaking, living display. It connected 5,000 years of history to the modern technological marvel we were watching. Pure genius.
